Why is Dry Mouth a Big Deal?

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, can have several effects on your oral health. Some of these effects include:

  1. Increased Risk of Tooth Decay and Gum Disease: Saliva helps wash away food particles and neutralize acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. Without enough saliva, you're more prone to cavities and gum disease.
  2. Difficulty Chewing, Swallowing, and Speaking: Saliva aids in the digestion process and helps with chewing and swallowing food. A lack of saliva can make these activities challenging
  3. Mouth Infections: Dry mouth can lead to an increased risk of oral infections, such as thrush, which is a fungal infection
  4. Bad Breath: Without enough saliva to cleanse the mouth, bacteria can build up, leading to bad breath
  5. Sore Throat and Hoarseness: A dry mouth can cause a sore throat and hoarseness, making it uncomfortable to speak
  6. Problems with dentures:  If you wear dentures, dry mouth can make them uncomfortable to wear and may cause them to fit poorly

What Can I Do?

Hydration & Moisture

  • Sip water frequently to keep your mouth moist.
  • Use a humidifier at night to add moisture to the air.
  • Practice nasal breathing to bypass the mouth with dry air.
  • Try a water spray bottle with a few drops of glycerin for extended hydration.

Stimulating Saliva Production

  • Chew sugar-free gum or suck on sugar-free lozenges.
  • Opt for xylitol-containing products like mouth sprays or gels.
  • Eat water-rich foods such as cucumber or melon.

Avoiding Drying Agents

  • Limit caffeine and alcohol, as they can worsen dryness.
  • Use alcohol-free mouthwash to prevent further irritation.
  • Avoid antihistamines and decongestants, which can reduce saliva flow.

If you're experiencing persistent dry mouth, it's a good idea to consult with either your dental hygienist or Dr. Vande Walle to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Ask us during your appointment about which products we can recommend to help alleviate symptoms.
